Thursday, Sept.1, 2005

It's been a busy two daysand I seem to have lost Aug 31 somewhere. I thought today was Aug 31 only to find out it was Sept. 1. Rick's got an excusse..it's called chemo brain when you forget stuff. I'm not sure what mine is.. certainly NOT age related!

We spent Tuesday at Madigan Hospital where Rick got his blood checked. Low and behold his sodium levels were back up to "normal". Normal being 137-145. Rick's was 139 so the doctor is now allowing him 3 liters of liquids a day. He is definitely a happy camper. Just to let you know that when he went into the hospital his level was 116..he couldn't walk, couldn't remember anything and had difficulty standing. That number is a major improvement for him. His spirits are up. Nancy and Rick Sherman brought meals on wheels tonight and of course the two Ricks have brains that are totally unfiltered so it is usually a lot of laughs. Tonight was no exception.

Yessterday afternoon he had a physical fitness test which left him quite fatigued. I think his trainer is fantastic so far, cute, good sense of humor, and an "I got your number" attitude. I think she will definitely be able to help Rick with stretching exercises and a muscle development program. He was in bed by 8:30 last night!!!

His eating is definitely improving with things he likes which we have to work hard to find. His taste buds have changed and we are searching for anything he likes...and somedays he likes it and some days he doesn't.

I just know all of your prayers are being heard. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. And please continue those prayers because miracles do happen.

We are both overwhelmed with gratitude and love and hope when we read your comments. Please keep them coming as Rick really enjoys reading the posts.

A good day today.
Love,
Sharon

Comment Hey Rick and Sharon, Love you both very very very much! Rick, I was thinking about your story a few weeks back when I flew back to Michigan for my Mom's wedding. They didn't have the rental car that I had asked for, so they bumped me up to a full size. I went to the slot they assigned, lo and behold there was this black Lincoln Towncar, leather heated seats, satellite radio, a gazillion buttons ( half of which I don't know what their function was ). So there I was cruising to Mom's wedding in this Italian mafia style car... and I remembered your experience of getting picked up by Mickey ( who was a mafia wheelman ). And that brought a smile to my face!!! Something about driving that Lincoln made me develop a thick Brando-like accent. Found myself saying things like: " take him for a little drive "... and " you talking to me? are YOU talking to ME??? "... Anyway, thank you for letting me share that experience with you, and thank you for all the times you both shared your experience with me. When things are going rough with me I hear Sharon saying what someone used to share with her... " all growth is slow, painful and undramatic ". I carry all your words in my heart and try my best to carry the message in my everyday living. I still believe you when you told me " we can have a life beyond our wildest imaginations, and all we have to do is follow a few certain simple directions, and do what we do here. " God bless you both, you are in our thoughts and prayers everyday! Love, Ethan

Comment Good morning Rick and Sharon, It is now 13:09 CET and the SUN is OUT. I'm in the office, on a Saturday no less partaking in my favorite part of counseling, PAPERWORK! I'm taking leave next week so Timmy...oops Tim, he is 14 now and the suffice had to drop from his name, are going to Europa park. I am thankful that I have a life with my son which is a gift of sobriety. Lou has started attending meetings on a regular basis and has added another dimension to the K-town AA. It is sorely needed with the continued exodus of people from the KMC. I heard from Ethan and Jesse up in Alaska and they are settling in well, but are beginning to prepare for their first long winter as the weather there is starting to change with shorter days and longer periods of darkness. Steve Redmond is down range in Quatar where they so nicely sent him for four months when he is less than a year from retirement. He spirits are up and has found AA in the desert. Dan S, Marv F, Rick and Lara, Steve R, Ivan B and several others are all departing the KMC this year. I keep thinking it might be a sign that I need to go too, but then Father Marc is still here and going strong, so I will too. Luther and Karen J have returned to Landstuhl and Luther is now head of the department of Psychiatry which miught be the first plus the ATF has had in years. I see MIchelle Link and she leaves on 18 Oct for Oklahoma and a fellowship/PhD program paid for by the Air Force. She is excited and ready to go! She has done a lot of good for the ADAP program at Ramstein. Joe S. just retired and is taking one of those high paying GS 12 or 14 jobs. I'm just glad to have a job that I enjoy. Well, it's time for me to stop procrastinating and get some work done. As always, you are in my prayers! Say hi to Arthur and Julie and all the others from 1034. Chris K.

Comment Hi there Rick and Sharon, Sitting down here in Hotlanta and thinking about the good times we had in Germany. Mike and I have been talking about it a lot, which is a good thing. I just sindned up with the Salvation Army for relief efforts from Katrina. We have a lot of refugees coming up here, and I feel that I need to do something to help out. You guys showed me how one person can make a difference. I love you both a lot!! Gerdy
