Hello, everyone. Here's your little newsie post for the day.

First, Sharon asks that anyone calling for information use the HOME phone number rather than cell phones. The number is (253) 472-5323.

Rick had a great day yesterday. He was awake almost almost the entire day. We started moving around with Rick's new walker. His strength and stability are returning quickly after spending almost three weeks on his back in the hospital. Rick's lungs are a bit congested, so we're going to do some more walking today to get them working again.

The regimen laid out by the physical therapist is 5-7 minutes of exercise several times a day. The alley behind Rick & Sharon's is paved, so we'll go out there until Rick is able to navigate the slope down to the street level.

Rick took a bath at home yesterday. We cut his hair, and he shaved with a razor instead of just using the electric shaver as he did in the hospital.

Rick & Nancy Sherman brought a great dinner over last night. We had grilled steak and baked potatoes. Sharon got Rick some sherbet for Rick. Rick complained because the the mixed sherbet Sharon brought hom had pink in it. Next time we'll stick with the orange, I guess. As many of you may know, Rick struggles just a little bit with change.

So, all is well. Rick is regaining his strength and endurance at a great pace. He is much more confident in moving around. Sharon is sleeping. Both are in great spirits.

We may have a couple of potential gaps in coverage. Jerry Pennington will be here from Aug 27-31. I'm not sure of the dates for Ursula and Patti Cothren. We do not have anyone scheduled for the time Jerry leaves until Ursula and Patti arrive.

Once again, please call on the home telephone when calling.

Comment Hi Rick and Sharon (and Carl and whomever else that I know that is in the Squires household right now)... I wanted you to know that you have been in my thoughts and prayers and - hopefully by now - in a bunch of Buddhist monks' (and monkettes', I think too) prayers...I sent off a prayer request to them since I figured that I'd bring in the "Big Guns" in terms of those spiritual giants who can sit in meditation all day long... Anyway, I am glad to hear via Carl that you are doing well. I keep thinking about picking up the phone and calling, but figured that this would be a bit less intrusive way to say "Hi, Love, Blessings, and I'm thinking about you"... I am getting ready to head back across the "pond" on Sunday to Russia (Aug 28) . First stop is Yekaterinburg (Ekaterinburg in the Geographical Dictionary), then on to St. Petersburg, then finally Moscow. I head back here to do laundry, pick up airline tickets, and read mail on Sept 14, then head down to Orlando to the World Safety Congress from the 16th to 23rd. Then I should be well landed back here for at least a month before either heading out to AZ or somewhere at the end of October.... I'm doing reasonably well, although am questioning my sanity right now - it's not enough to head out for a month of travel, but I decided (here's the insanity part) to have my apartment renovated while I'm gone - they are gutting the kitchen, bathroom and doing major modifications to my closet in my bedroom....hm...and I am wondering how much I trust the contract that I signed?!?!? Oh well....the surprise should be interesting.... I got 2 new additions to the family recently - a brother and sister pair of kittens. They are keeping me company and I am growing to love having my babies around me. Hemingway, the boy, is a polydactyl (7 toes on each front paw) and is quite the rascal. The way that he's growing, I figure that I will have a small mountain lion on my hands here soon. At 4.5 months, he's already over 7 pounds.... and Prudence, the girl, is a beautiful, dainty little calico kitty that can hold her own with her brother despite her femininity...I took them both in to get spayed/neutered last Friday. Although Prudence had the rougher procedure, Hemingway was the one who came out with the attitude...guess he didn't like losing his manhood... I'm doing reasonably well despite trying to do too much right now and despite the other insane thing that I've decided to try recently - internet dating...however, THAT subject is one that is left better for another time; otherwise, you'd probably send someone out here with commitment papers. Let it suffice to say that I am getting to meet a wide variety of "humanity"...and I am hoping that perhaps through the law of averages, that perhaps one might work out eventually.... Be well, my friends, and heal vibrantly, radiantly, and with all the Love of the Universe blanketing you in its brilliant Light. Much, Much Love, Kate

Comment Okay, Having been through this cancer experience twice myself, and feeling totally helpless from the other side of the country, and loving my bratty brother-in-law, Rick and my for real sister, Sharon as much as I do, I have to DO SOMETHING! So here goes my bossy self “suggesting” some things that might brighten their days at home. Happy things helped me get through the angst and side effects of long days when you don’t have enough oomph to do anything. So here’s a few ideas, (which many of this wide circle of such good friends have already done or thought about) : Have a funny story about Rick that will put a smile on his face? -put it in a card and send it to him. Seen a funny movie? -send him the title in a card. Have some calming music you enjoy -he would enjoy it too-burn him a CD. Have something special you think he might like to eat -bake it and send it to him Have a funny picture of Rick & Sharon or you and Rick -send it to him. Gather your group and take a picture of yourselves holding up a GETWELL sign, and send it to him-not by email. They have enough to do without having to print out pictures-Let’s plaster their house with smiling faces, good wishes, cards, jokes, goodies to eat, -anything positive and humorous. Who likes to laugh more than Rick (and Sharon could certainly use some humor right now)? Logging onto the computer when you can barely drag your butt to the bathroom takes a lot of energy. Opening mail the old fashioned way and seeing it all around you keeps your spirit up and fighting! Swing into action! Join Rick’s Army Brigade and help him battle. Miracles do happen, and I will never give up that belief. All my love to everyone connected to this wonderful couple, Sharon’s sister, Robie
