Good morning, everyone. It has ben a super busy week for us here. Rick went to see his oncologist on Tuesday with some resulting good news. His sodium level was up to 139 (137-145 is normal) so the doctor gave him up to 3 liters of liquids to drink a day. Rick was delighted! Dr. McCune also told him he could go off the low residue diet and just eat what he would like. The first chance he got he went after a roast beef dip sandwich with french fries! I was not with him to tell him that fried foods were NOT on the list. Joey told him at least he'd gotten away with it once! We took Joey and Patti shopping to all our favorite stores like Tuesday Morning and TJ Max and Ross. Patti had a great time as she brought Joey the Bank along with her! I also had a good time and picked up some easy listening CD's for Rick and several yoga tapes per suggestion of Patty and Carl.

Wed. Rick had his for real first time PT workout. Jeff, the therapist, had him do some low level exercises for about thirty minutes but he was worn out at the end. We go back today.

Thursday was a tough one. He had his chemo therapy starting at 7:30 and did not finish until 4:30. So he was all day hooked up to the machine. On the first day of each new cycle (this is cycle 2) they give him Irinotecan for 90 minutes and then the tough one, cisplatin, for 4 hours. His new blood count revealed a low white and red cell count so they gave him a shot in the tummy to bring up his red cell count. Not enough oxygen getting to those cells which cause him to be really tired and forgetful as not enough oxygen gets to the brain, either. We continue to watch those white cells and try to keep him from getting any infections as he is now easily prone to those. Also his sodium count had gone down to 137 so I think we will have to monitor exactly how much liquid he is taking in.

Rick's spirits are still very positive with all of the wonderful prayers, and cards, and care packages that are coming to him. We pretty well stay in today and do it just 24 hours at a time.

Joey and Patti have been just wonderful. We have had such a good time with them. It's like we were never separated for those 15 years. It's just amazing. We will be sad to see them leave on Sunday.

All in all, a good week for Rick. His black eye is almost gone and since he lost so much weight he is looking quite fabulous. So fabulous that Sandy Ladd sent him a really cute "chick magnet" ! which he promptly hung on the refrigerator.

Please continue to pray for each of us. Your comments are wonderful and he loves hearing your messages of hope and love. He will get his new glasses prescription next week which had to be changed due to the fall in the hospital.

Thank you all. You have no idea how much your support means to us and how much it helps to keep us positive and in the midst of all of this so blessed beyond belief for all of the love and kindness.
LOVE,
Sharon

Comment Hey Rick and Sharon Can't wait to show up at your front door. Last time I was in Washington, I saw the aftermath of Mt Helen what a site. Hope there are no big surprises again. If we watch tv Rick, no snoring after the first ten minutes of the movie. This time I will be rude and wake you. I got lots of street news and making up a few stories myself. Also, I will be monitoring the stories you share. Unfortuantely we do have a lot of sick people here in ktown, but it keeps the room filled...That is what I like... Hugs..see you soon. love Erica

Comment Rick and Sharon, Thanks for continuing to share your victories and progress. Reading the notes to you is like sharing old home week from Germany. I am still in Kosovo, but am in my 30-day window for leaving. I am looking forward to seeing Sylvan, Val and others in the program that you may not have met when I spend my week in Germany outprocessing. When I get home, I will be looking forward to getting together with Julie and Arthur B. Barry has been involved in volunteering at the shelters for victims of the hurricanes. San Antonio has quite a few people that have been displaced. We will continue to keep you both in our thoughts and prayers. Love and Hugs, Anne & Barry

Comment Good morning Rickand Sharon! This morning in K.C. is glorious----sunny and 74 degrees at 7:30 a.m. The day is filled with hope and joy already, and I can hardly wait to get it off and running. I'm sending some of that sunshine and lots of hugs to you along with this little note. We had a busy weekend, as usual---grandkids' soccer and baseball games and son Brian's and son-in-law, Gary's softball games just for starters. We went out hunting hedge balls. Yes, you heard right. We go in search every fall, when it is time for them to fall from the trees. Our efforts were rewarded with two kitchen-trash-bags full. We use them to keep spiders out of our house. It may sound like an old wives tale, but it truly works. The balls are about the size of a softball, bright green and for some reason have something in them that repels spiders. We use them in all of the closets, the basement, and even inside the base cabinets in the kitchen and bathrooms. They have no odor detectable by humans. They last all through the year, slowly turning brown and shriveling up to about half their original size; but they don't lose their effectiveness even when they are all dried up. We will probably go out hunting at least one more time this fall to get more balls to put in the garage. We had a surprise visit from one of Steve's sister, Sharon, and husband Terry yesterday. They drove in from Yankton to pick up a load of batteries from a couple of their suppliers here in town. (They own a battery store in Yankton.) It was a nice surprise. Sharon is a cancer survivor. It has been four years since she fought the big fight; and she is still cancer free. Her hair came back in gray, so she decided it would be fun to be blond. She has the cutest new hairstyle and the most marvelous attitude about the blessings in her life. We talked about you, Rick. Then she immediately said she would add you to her prayer list. We all had a group prayer special for you, dear cousin. So, you have people in Yankton (bring back any memories?) praying for you too. I believe strongly in the power of prayer; and you are being showered from every direction with that power. Hang in there and take one day at a time. Love and hugs from Kansas City! Judi

Comment Dear, Slim (Rick)…. (Remember in Germany when you went on that diet and we started calling you Slim! Guess what!!! We are back to calling you Slim) & 5 ***** General in charge of health and well being of old golfer dude with the funny hat (Sharon), I had a pleasant time with Connie and Little Richard yesterday, we met at the VA and just sat in the Cantina drank cokes and just got acquainted with each other, if all works out, they will have Thanksgiving dinner at our house in Derby. I have tried to get the Make a Wish foundation and Locks of Love and get some hair for Slim, but they tell me that he has to be under the age of ten, I told them that I thought at times that he did behave like he was ten, especially on the golf course, they weren’t buying it!!! Then I remembered that you don’t have allot of hair anyway! On a serious note Rick, with God’s help and prayers from people from allover the world your goal of turning this disease into another beaten down opponent, just like you did with alcoholism… just like you do on the golf course… Is possible. Don’t worry that your shaft is bent after 18 holes, or that you need all of us to wait so you can hold up to wash your balls, its even okay if your hands are so sweaty you cant get a good grip, or even if you have a nice stroke, but your follow through has a lot to be desired… Keep your sense of humor, your enthusiasm, your intense desire to win and your candor going and never forget to keep fighting the fight, praying the prayer…. you are one of the most influential persons in my life, and I credit you where I am TODAY because of you, YES! I know it was HP working through you, BUT, I took all your suggestions and ran with them…. you sure helped me complicate Mike P., Ronnie B. and George O’s lives for a while, they are thankful I am sure. Love ya BOTH like a brother from another mother. Easy Does It BUT Do It! God Bless! Mik

Comment Good morning Rick and Sharon. It is a beautiful, sunny day in Kansas City. I'm packing some of our warm sunshine into this message. Can you feel it wrapping around you, just like a big hug from your Kansas City Cousin? Roland turned 61 yesterday. Steve and I, along with daughter Kelly and granddaughters Sabrina and Victoria, went out to pick him up and take him out to eat dinner last night. He chose I-HOP because her said he was hungry for biscuits and gravy. He seemed to enjoy it very much. It was a festive evening. His little nieces made it a less than peaceful affair; but their joy and exuberance really made it seem more like a party. Roland really perked up. I think he gets kind of lonely. I baked his favorite cake, spice cake with caramel icing. I also took him a huge container of home-made goulash, as that was his special request. I make it like my mom used to, and Roland really appreciates my cooking. We had a nice visit and hopefully made Roland's birthday a special occasion. Our K.C. Chiefs won their season opener yesterday 27 - 7. That was exciting. I hope that is a forecast of good things to come. After our pathetic baseball season, we surely could use something to cheer about. :-) Well, not much news here right now. Everyone is doing fine. We all are sending you hope and love and lots of positive vibes all the time from Kansas City. You both are doing a fine job taking one day at a time. I think there is no better way to face this formidable foe. I believe in you, Rick, and in your ability to win today's battle and the war of all of the tomorrows. You have always been so strong, and that inner strength will carry you through. I love you both very much and will keep you in my thoughts and prayers everyday. Your cousin, Judi

Comment You're a class act Rick and Sharon. We had a good meeting today. It is an 11th step mtg. at 1100 in the German Cantine in Heidelberg. I shared about you doing the deal under any circumstances. You still attract me without promoting. My HP is revealing Himself to me through you. Our neighbor had a terrific migraine yesterday and so I washed her car for her and gave her some chicken soup. That isn't the way I would normally behave. It is normal to be dysfunctional today. Thank God you showed me this program and I became abnormal.

Comment Good Morning Rick! Good Morning Sharon! I just wanted to share something cool with you two today! We have some really awesome meetings up here in Fairbanks, my favorite of which is a neat little AA/Alanon candlelight meeting. That is my wife Jessie and my steady date! Anyway, as I am prone to do, I drank way too much coffee at the meeting last night. Needless to say I was just tossing and turning at one in the morning, so I got up and thank God I did! The Aurora Borealis was dancing and weaving across the night sky, right over our house. Jess and I have been blessed over and over and over again by HP, least of all by this wonderful home we have . We live way up on a ridge, surrounded by Birch and Pine, with a gorgeous view of the Alaska mountain range. Anyway, watching that Aurora dance last night, I had to think of you Rick. That Aurora was all yours. We love you guys, and pray for you everyday... God bless ODAAT
