Happy Sunday, everyone! Thank you all for keeping the comments coming. Rick got a real thrill yesterday when I printed off the entire blog so he could read it.

Yesterday was low profile day. I think we overextended Rick the day before when he was awake from 8:00 AM to 11:00 PM. He walked quite a bit with the walker, and spent a coule of hours outside enjoying the sun. Some of you may realize how important it is to enjoy the sun when you're in Seattle. When you live here, you don't get many opportunites to actually see the sun. Usually daytime means the clouds just get a little brighter. When Patty came here a few years ago for Microsoft training she got me a sweatshirt that said, "Seattle Rain Festival: January 1st through December 31st." I actually saw Mt. Ranier when I went to the commissary yesterday!

Rick spirits remain high. We had the first annual J Street Squires house AA meeting last night. There were five of us in attendance, and it was a very good meeting!

Rick seems a little tired again this morning. He's going to take a nap for a bit. After breakfast we'll go for a walk outside.

So, another good day yesterday. Rick is having a great time swapping lies with Nancy's Rick. They certainly have a great time deciding whether the Marines or the Army is a better branch of service. Nothing like living in the present, heh?

Things have settled down significantly since Rick has come home from the hospital. We're settling into a good working routine in the house now. Sharon is like a mother hen monitoring Rick's medications. Rick is able to do most everything without assistance.

It's all good!

Carl

Comment Dear Rick, I am glad to hear how well you are doing. to add my voice to the argument about who is better, I can tell you that even the Marines have pampered housing in Hawaii. Therefore, the Army must be the stronger as their housing is much like roughing it! I went to see Mike and you know he sends his thoughts and prayers. Keep up the good work with your therapist. The phys. therapy helped my Dad with His recovery from his bone cancer. He has been cancer-free for 5 years now. Getting back the weight and muscle-tone helped his attitude and you know that attitude is (nearly) everything! Love, Donna

Comment Hello Rick & Sharon and other gang members. This is Kris, Elden & Marion's daughter. I just wanted you all to know that I am praying for you daily and that I have put you on my church prayer chain as well. I will continue to follow the Blog and keep putting prayers in Rick and all of his "Care Team". With love in Christ, Kris

Comment Hello Everyone, Rick S. (Marine) & I took Carl to the airport last night so I will be updating the Blog. I just talked to Sharon and she told me to pass on the following message. Carl Sharon & Rick thank you for being such a blessing in their lives. Rick had his chemo treatment today & it went well. The doctor has prescribed an appetite stimulant. His sodium level has risen from 116 to 135 so his fluid intake level was raised to 1 1/2 liters. (good thing) His black eye that makes it appear as if Rick is a victim of domestic violence which really was caused by a trash can is slowly improving. Sharon has maintained her innocence. Father Williams came by the house today to give them communion. Rick also walked for 10 minutes today. Wow quite a day.

Comment I am glad that Rick feels well enough to argue. I have been married to an Army guy, and am now married to an Air Force guy. Never been with a Marine, but it is never too late. Just kidding!! Love you, Gerdy

Comment Hi, Rick and Sharon! We've been following Carl's blog the past few days~~just want you to know we think of you many, many times during the day. We're impressed with your vast network of friends around the world. . .we've personally heard of your situation from mutual friends living in several different countries. It's been heartwarming to hear all the positive comments and support from your friends and family. We've been reminded of our many good times together in Germany. We hope that the love that has been expressed toward you both lets you know that you are not facing this battle alone. We are really thankful that Carl is writing the blog! God bless you both! It is August, and just think...you are not helping Sharon set up her classroom. :) I Will give you back your health and heal your wounds. -Jeremiah 30:17

Comment Just wanted you guys to know that I've been thinking about you and keeping up with everything as I spent time situating my mom in Florida and Brooke in Denver. As I've read the daily comments it's evident that SOME things NEVER change. Just be on the alert....David's pending retirement means that Sharon may have to put up with MORE sick humor than she can deal with since he will be able to come for a visit! Love and hugs to you both! Deb PS Is Roberta keeping score somewhere?

Comment Back to school for us tomorrow :-((((((( We had a great coconut shrimp and Chinese salad for dinner. Will watch a movie and send a few final emails before retiring. We're so glad to hear Rick is rising to his occasion there...Sharon, too. As Scott Peck says, in the first line of his landmark book The Road Less Traveled, "Life is difficult." That says it all. When we accept that basic fact, all seems doable. God bless you both. You are in our thoughts daily. Love, Sherry & Larry

Comment Rick Squires is a tough old Tanker and he will do just fine. He is a thief, however, as I caught him in the act of stealing my POLO RL leather jacket on numerous occasions while we worked together at Ramstein. Rick and I enjoyed having lunch together most days and trading old war stories from our active duty days. I know that embellished most of his stories, but I let him get by with it. Rick was always as good support person for me and we had a lot of laughs together mostly at others expense. Ha. I did have to monitor is intake of Snickers bars and other chocolate candies and once found a wrapper in his trash can when he was supposed to be on a stringent diet. So, you all had better monitor that boy and make certain that he does what he is supposed to do now. All the best to Rick and Sharon in this challenging time. My prayers are with them.

Comment With all this arguing about who is better I thought the following story sent to me by a guy who now does the deal one day at a time might be appropriate. It is sobering to remember who is is in charge. 17 years ago I got to see the miracle happen for him as I was returned to a useful life beyond my wildest imagination. I promised him such a life if he would follow a few simple suggestions as Rick and others had been promising me. odaat Sylvan A great message! ~ D E A T H ~ WHAT A WONDERFUL WAY TO EXPLAIN IT A sick man turned to his doctor, as he was preparing to leave the examination room and said, "Doctor, I am afraid to die. Tell me what lies on the other side." Very quietly, the doctor said, "I don't know." "You don't know? You, a Christian man, do not know what is on the other side?" The doctor was holding the handle of the door; on the other side came a sound of scratching and whining, and as he opened the door, a dog sprang into the room and leaped on him with an eager show of gladness. Turning to the patient, the doctor said, "Did you notice my dog? He's never been in this room before. He didn't know what was inside. He knew nothing except that his master was here, and when the door opened, he sprang in without fear. I know little of what is on the other side of death, but I do know one thing... I know my Master is there and that is enough." May today there be peace within you. May you trust God that you are exactly where you are meant to be. I believe that friends are quiet angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly.

Comment And I would also like to get in the Air Force line as well. Of course, I won't get there until noonish. So what if the Army does more by 0900 than we do all day? We Chair Farce people PACE ourselves! A bad day for us is when the cable TV goes out. Seriously, easy does it means that you get to allow other people to do for you what you have so freely done for them. The circle is unbroken. Love you guys lots!! and Rick give Sharon a BIG hug for me!! Then have her return the favor. Love Jackie G.

Comment Carl, Allow me to help put an end to the debate in the house about which is the better service. Rick knows it has to be the Air Force!!! By the way Rick I'm still not going to give you any strokes, even if you show up with a walker. Once a sand bagger always a sand bagger. But seriously I have a standing tee time at Pinehurst when ever you are ready. I was thinking you the other day at the fort bragg noon meeting as I was telling a new comer if they followed a few simple suggestions I could promise him a life beyond his wildest imagination. Thank you Rick for that same promise those years back. I have been blessed to see a wonderful fellowship grow up around me, inspite of myself. I love you Rick, and easy does it but DO it!! Comment RICK, JAMES AND I ARE GLAD THAT YOU HAVE NOT HAD AN OPPORTUNITY TO MISS THE WEATHER IN GERMANY. ALL IS NORMAL HERE, IT RAINED ON THE PARISH PICNIC. I THINK THAT WE HAD ABOUT TWO WEEKS OF SUMMER. JAMES WOULD LIKE TO ADD THE AIR FORCE TO THE ARGUMENT ABOUT WHO IS BETTER. YOU ARE IN OUR PRAYERS. CIAO AND LOVE
